IRONMAN

Beginning of IRONMAN

In 1978 the Hawaii Ironman Triathlon was held on the island of Oahu by combining three events that were already held there. The Waikiki Rough Water Swim (2.4 miles), The Oahu Bike Race (112 miles) and The Honolulu Marathon (26.2 miles). However, in 1981 the race was moved to another island (Big Island) and since 1982 the Ironman World Championship has been held annually in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii in October.

It is owned and organised by the World Triathlon Corporation. Moreover, Ironman 70.3 World Championship is held in September and changes location each year. The event has become known for its exhausting length, harsh race conditions and Emmy Award-winning television coverage.
